This 14-Day Kalahari Crossing Safari is an experience of the Kalahari. The vastness of the Kalahari requires a decent amount of time to explore and understand. The terrain and remoteness of the safari require planning of logistics and thorough planning. Our Kalahari Crossing Safari is always with two vehicles.
We use a backup vehicle to carry food supplies and camping equipment. The second vehicle takes care of our travellers on safari. These vehicles have radio communication and will drive convoys to assist with crossing the dune belt. It is of utmost importance to have two vehicles on our safaris. This two-vehicle allows us to enter and cross rough terrains within Southern Africa.
The forgotten land within Botswana. The location is in the far southwest corner of Botswana. Mabua, as the locals call the area, is filled with Kalahari vegetation, large pans and small vegetated dunes. The diversity of the vegetation differs from Kgalagadi and consists of acacia, combretum and Terminalia.
The roads are two spoor sand tracks and require four-wheel drive vehicles to explore. It has numerous pans and some assisted watering holes. The animals move freely within this large area. There are only camping sites available in Mabua with basic facilities. Water is the primary concern when visiting this area.
It is essential to carry enough drinking water and water for showering. Every traveller will receive a limited water supply and need to conserve this during the safari experience. Conserve water by not wasting water like washing clothes or washing the car. The arid experience and the teamwork of our travellers and our experienced team will make this safari a genuinely wild experience to remember.
There is a 200km dune belt and two spoor track roads between Mabua and Kgalagadi. This is where our team and traveller will cross over from Mabua towards Kgalagadi. The crossing is in one or two days. This will depend on the road conditions. The name of the safari says it all—the Kalahari Crossing Safari.
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, or the Kalahari Gemsbok Park as it was called in the past, is the second leg of our Safari. South African National Parks manage this part of the park. It comprises two riverbeds, namely the Nossob River and the Auob river. Along this river, beds are camping sites and accommodation on offer. The main camps are fenced, and the dune camps are not. Rules are strictly enforced. However, it contrasts the wild Mabua side, allowing for excellent sightings and wildlife experiences.
Kgalagadi is a well-kept conservation area. The service of the local staff is immaculate. Here we can relax and plan our game drives according to our interests. There are more watering holes, and this allows for more sightings. The camps have power from 6 am to 10 pm. We still need to conserve water as this is the source of life within the Kalahari. No water, no life. The Kalahari Crossing offers us an expedition combined with a wildlife safari. The two regions that we visit is completely different. The combination of these two areas will add value to your Kalahari experience.
Our Team operates 12 months of the year within the Kalahari. This allows us to document animals and experience the difference in seasons and animal behaviour. Every single safari expedition, we have the opportunity to learn and discover more about nature.
Our schedules are open for travellers to partake on specific dates. However, we custom design private safaris and offer flexibility on starting and ending destinations.
